Every autumn, the same thing happens. The heating goes on, the wind picks up, and skin that felt fine in August suddenly feels rough, tight and red.
Winter is hard on skin. But a few small changes make a noticeable difference.
1. Switch to a richer moisturiser
The lightweight lotion that worked in summer may not be enough now. Look for creams with ceramides, glycerin or squalane — ingredients that help the skin hold on to moisture.
2. Turn the water temperature down
Long, hot showers feel wonderful on a cold evening, but they strip natural oils from your skin. Keep water lukewarm and showers short, then moisturise within a few minutes of drying off.
3. Don't drop your SPF
Shorter days don't mean zero UV. If you spend time outdoors — especially near snow, which reflects sunlight — keep using sunscreen on exposed skin.
4. Go easy on exfoliation
When skin is already dry and sensitised, strong scrubs and acids can make things worse. Reduce exfoliation to once a week, or pause it until your skin feels calmer.
5. Add moisture to the air
Central heating dries out indoor air. A humidifier in your bedroom, or even a bowl of water near a radiator, can help your skin stay more comfortable overnight.
6. Don't forget lips and hands
These areas have fewer oil glands and chap quickly. Keep a nourishing lip balm and hand cream in your bag, and wear gloves outdoors.
Small, consistent habits protect your skin far better than a rescue routine once the damage is done.
The takeaway
Winter skincare isn't about adding more products — it's about swapping to gentler, richer ones and protecting your skin's natural barrier.
